Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning star in this music-fueled story of the ground-breaking, all girl, teenage rock band of the 1970s: The Runaways. The film follows two friends, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. Joan and Cherie fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley, played by Michael Shannon, who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits. With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself—and so do its two leads: Joan is the band’s pure rock’ n’ roll heart, while Cherie, with her Bowie-Bardot looks, is the sex kitten. Written and directed by Floria Sigismondi, the film chronicles Joan and Cherie’s tumultuous relationship on and off stage, as the band starts to break out.

Brian Cox stars as Jacques, the curmudgeonly owner of a gritty New York dive bar that serves as home to a motley assortment of professional drinkers. Plot: The story revolves around three New York police officers over one week. Eddie is a patrolman played by Richard Gere who only has 7 days left before he can pull the pin and retire. Plot: This is an incredible window into the experience of extreme suffering along the lines of Leaving Las Vegas. That said, its success in conveying this misery is also a curse, because it makes it a beatdown to watch, and so I suspect a lot of people will avoid the film for that reason. When Susan Sarandon, who starred in the film, was asked in the Q&A what she thought of the film having now seen it, she said something fairly shocking. This is not an exact quote, but it was something along the lines of it was a pleasure to work with everyone in the film, but now actually watching it was “horrible”. Ouch! That doesn’t take away from the effectiveness of the film — it is damned powerful, and by the end everyone in the theater was balling their eyes out. But don’t say I didn’t warn you — the film perfectly captures and brings the audience along on the ultimate misery extravaganza, and how often are we in the mood to watch that?
